The key to get your dog to focus on you more is to make yourself worthwhile.   The goal of this exercise is to teach your dog to focus on you without you prompting your dog.   It is best to work for 5-10 minutes several times a day.

All you have to do is sit on your couch and wait for your dog to look at you.  The second your dog looks at you say "Yes" or "Good Boy" and give him a piece of kibble.   If your dog starts to stare at you, you can throw the treat a few feet away from you.  Practice this in different rooms.

If your dog is doing well, practice in the backyard but make sure to take higher value treats like pea-sized pieces turkey dogs or cheese.  You are adding distractions so you need to up the ante with the treat.
